Saaed Ghani – Sindh Minister for Education and Labour, paid homage to the martyrs of Chicago whose contribution to the workers’ cause that has benefited millions of workers around the world.
On the occasion of Labour Day, Saeed Ghani in a message, highlighted the significance of the ‘Haymarket affair’, which took place at a labour demonstration on May 4, 1886. Four workers died that day, sparking a world-wide outcry of the protection of workers’ rights.
The martyrs of Chicago are the ones that should be credited for saving the lives of thousands of workers as their sacrifice ensured the necessary law making required to secure workers’ rights and interests, he added.
The provincial minister said that the labour force in Pakistan is still marginalized and deprived of their rights. Since 18th amendment, Sindh government has introduced 16 new laws aimed at the welfare of workers in the province, he claimed.
Mr Ghani has urged the federal government to heed to the outcry of labour force and introduce an economic relief package for workers, who have been facing the grim economic repercussions of COVID-19 lockdown.
