Washington/Beijing: The US COVID-19 death toll exceeds 10,000 while Chinese officials have announced no new coronavirus deaths for the first time since January.
The United States has reported the third highest COVID-19 death toll in the world with 10,783 deaths. The country already has the highest number of confirmed cases reaching 366,614 coronavirus patients across the country.
New York City alone, has reported more than 3,100 deaths.
White House health experts have warned of 100,000 to 240,000 COVID-19 deaths in the country.
However, Chinese officials, for the first time, announced no new COVID-19 casualty as cases in mainland China have observed a downward trend since March. For now, the country braces for a second wave of infections brought in from overseas, with health officials reporting nearly 1,000 imported cases in total.
Earlier, Chinese government had re-opened Wuhan city – the epicentre of virus outbreak in China. Wuhan is scheduled to allow people to leave the city on 8 April. Officials are concerned about the possibility of a second wave of infections, warning people to remain vigilant as it orders local health authorities to step up detection, monitoring and supervision.
