Pakistan is set to hold ‘World Environment Day 2021 in association with UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
As per details, Pakistan will host World Environment Day 2021 on June 5th as part of UN’s efforts to highlight adverse effects of climate change and initiate efforts, initiatives on a global scale to address it.
This year World Environment Day will be observed under the theme ‘ecosystem restoration’ as the UN is set to launch it Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 this year as well.
The development comes as Pakistan has taken significant steps towards tackling adverse effects of climate change such as multiple reforestation and plantations drives.
Pakistan successfully achieved a significant milestone by meeting United Nations Sustainable Development goal (SDG) 13, ten years before deadline in July 2020 last year.
Pakistan’s 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Project has been lauded by various international organizations as well as Britain.
British Environment Minister – Lord Goldsmith of Richmond Park is on record saying that that the world can learn from the 10 billion tree tsunami project as the initiative is a great example for the efforts against climate change which other countries can adopt.
Pakistan’s Contribution To Global Environment, Climate Friendly Initiatives
The Billion Tree Tsunami was launched in 2014, by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan, as a response to the challenge of global warming. Pakistan’s Billion Tree Tsunami restores 350,000 hectares of forests and degraded land to surpass its Bonn Challenge commitment.
The project aimed at improving the ecosystems of classified forests, as well as privately owned waste and farm lands, and therefore entails working in close collaboration with concerned communities and stakeholders to ensure their meaningful participation through effectuating project promotion and extension services. The projected was completed in August 2017, ahead of schedule.
On 3 September 2018, after becoming Prime Minister of Pakistan following the 2018 Pakistani general election, PM Imran Khan launched a 5-year, country-wide 10 billion tree plantation drive from Makhniyal, KPK to combat the effects of global warming.
World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June every year, and is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on environmental issues emerging from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.
World Environment Day has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, WED has provided a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and all celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate environmental causes.
