Sindh government, on Friday, announced its decision to seal off its border with neighbouring Balochistan to stop the wheat smuggling.
As per the details, Sindh’s Food department has written to Interior Ministry to seal off the border under Food Act.
The decision comes as Sindh cabinet approved the decision to seal off the border as wheat mafia is active in smuggling large quantities of wheat from Sindh, which if not stopped might result in another wheat crisis.
The wheat purchase target has been fixed at 1.4 million tonnes by Sindh government. The process started from March 26, and so far 40 per cent of the procurement has been done.
Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has expressed his disappointment in the speed and efficiency of the process and has directed deputy directors, food controllers and other relevant officials to improve the efficiency and speed of the process so that the wheat procurement target can be achieved in time.
