Sindh government, on Tuesday, requested Supreme Court (SC) to hear its appeal against the Sindh High Court (SHC) verdict in Daniel Pearl murder case next week.
In an application written to the Supreme Court, Sindh government has maintained its position against the SHC verdict in Daniel Pearl murder case, arguing that there is sufficient evidence against the accused contrary to Sindh High Court’s decision to acquit the four culprits.
“There is apprehension of absconsion/repeating offence by respondents, hence, the matter is of great urgency,” read the application written to Supreme Court by Sindh government.
It is pertinent to remember that earlier, on April 22, Sindh government had filed a petition against the SHC’s verdict that rescinded the sentences of the accused in the Daniel Pearl murder case. In its petition, Sindh government has urged the top court to reinstate the death sentence of Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh – the prime suspect in the case whose sentence was reduced to seven years by Sindh High Court.
On April 2, a two-judge SHC bench headed by Justice Mohammad Karim Khan Agha had reduced the sentence of Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh from death penalty to seven years, while the other three suspects namely Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil were declared ‘not guilty’.
