Sindh Culture Department is paying tribute to legendary Sindhi poet, author on his 98th birthday on Tuesday March 2nd today.
Culture Department of Government of Sindh under honorable Syed Sardar Ali Shah – Minister for Culture, Tourism, Antiquities and Archives is holding a seminar on Shaikh Ayaz at Arts Council Karachi.
The seminar involves documentary on Shaikh Ayaz, speeches, panel discussion and the recitation of ‘Kalam-e-Ayaz’ by Zia Mohyeddin.
Notable attendees include Provincial Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, Ghulam Akbar Laghari – Secretary Culture and Tourism, Haris Khaleeq, Jami Chandio and others.
Who Was Shaikh Ayaz?
Shaikh Ayaz was born as Mubarak Ali on 2 March 1923 in Shikarpur, Sindh. He is one of the most acclaimed and prominent Sindhi poets whose literary contribution to Sindhi language is considered an invaluable academic asset.
He authored more than 50 books on poetry, biographies, plays and short stories in both Sindhi and Urdu languages throughout his six-decade long career.
He also wrote short stories, operas, essays, poetry, travelogues, diaries, an autobiography and the translation of ‘Shah Jo Risalo’ in Urdu.
In Urdu he is authored two poetry books namely Booye Gul Nala-i-dil and Neel Kanth Aur Neem Ke Pate.
Shaikh Ayaz passed away on December 28th 1997 in Karachi.
For his notable literary contributions government of Pakistan has awarded with him with ‘Sitara-e-Imtiaz’. Furthermore, ‘Shaikh Ayaz University’ in Shikarpur has been named after him.
