SHENZHEN: As a response to research reports suspecting the spread of coronavirus occurred due to wildlife trade and earliest incidence of disease traced back to people exposed to wet markets in the country, China has imposed a ban on the sale of cat and dog meat for consumption.
The news is has caused relief among the animal rights activists circles. “Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan,” the government said in an order posted on Wednesday. “This ban also responds to the demand and spirit of human civilisation.”
Chinese government announced in February that a ban would be in place on wild animals’ meat trade. Shenzhen is the first province to execute this law. Dog meat is a popular food in many parts of Asia.
