Federal government is reported to have decided to hold Senate elections in February 2021 next year.
According to sources, the decision to hold Senate elections in February instead of March was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan.
During the meeting, Fawad Chaudhry – Federal Minister for Science and Technology suggested that Senate elections should be held ahead of schedule. The proposal was then backed, supported by other cabinet members.
Furthermore, the government intends to adopt ‘open voting’ for Senate elections i.e. via ‘show of hands’.
Babar Awan – Advisor to PM on Parliamentary Affairs along with Khalid Jawed Khan – Attorney General of Pakistan and Babar were also present at the meeting and briefed the members regarding legal matters pertaining to the issue of Senate elections.
The government seeks to approach Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) by filing a reference under Article 186 of Constitution of Pakistan.
