Election for Chairman and Deputy Chairman are set to be held on Friday (tomorrow) after President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi issued directions summoning the session for upper house.
Senate session is set to convene at 10:00 am on Friday (tomorrow) for the election of Chairman and Deputy Chairman Senate.
The election for the top two Senate slots will be held in accordance to clause (1) of Article 54 of 1973 Constitution of Pakistan.
“The president has been pleased to summon the Senate to meet in the Parliament (House) Building, Islamabad, on Friday, the 12th March 2021, at 10 am,” read the notification issued by Senate secretariat.
The session will begin with the oath taking ceremony for the newly elected senators followed by the submission of nomination papers by the candidates for Chairman and Deputy Chairman Senate.
The election for Chairman and Deputy Chairman Senate will be held later in the evening via ‘secret balloting’.
It is to be noted that government has already nominated current Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani for a second term at the top post, whereas Senator Mirza Mohammad Afridi is the nominee for Deputy Chairman slot from the government’s side.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has nominated PPP leader and for prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for Senate Chairmanship; whereas JUI-F’s Abdul Ghafoor Haideri has been nominated as opposition’s candidate for Deputy Chairman Senate.
