Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has challenged the win of PDM backed Yousuf Raza Gilani in Senate elections in Islamabad High Court (IHC).
As per details, PTI’s Ali Nawaz has filed a petition in IHC challenging Yousuf Raza Gilani’s win in March 3rd Senate elections.
The plea argues that PPP leader and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is ineligible to be a senator as he is a ‘convicted’ individual.
The petition filed by PTI seeks Gilani’s win to be declared null and void by the court.
Meanwhile, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), on Tuesday (today) held a hearing seeking disqualification of newly elected senator Yousuf Raza Gilani over rigging allegations pertaining to former premier’s son Ali Haider Gilani’s leaked video that showed him ‘teaching’ PTI MNAs on how to ‘waste’ their vote in Senate elections.
The ECP hearing was held after petitioner Pervez Hussain had accused Yousuf Raza Gilani of being involved in fraud and ineligible to hold a senate seat in accordance to Article 62 and 63 of the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan.
The development comes as PDM’s joint candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani scored an upset in Senate elections by defeating Abdul Hafeez Sheikh on Islamabad’s general seat for the upper house. PPP leader Yousuf Raza Gilani secured 169 votes in contrast to Abdul Hafeez Sheikh’s 164 votes.
It is to be noted that Yousuf Raza Gilani has been nominated as the joint candidate for Senate Chairman by Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
