Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has extended deadline for the submission for nomination papers for Senate elections to February 15th.
“In order to facilitate the aspiring candidates, the Election Commission of Pakistan while exercising powers conferred under Article 218 (3) read with Section 128 of the Elections Act 2017, hereby extends the time for filing of nomination papers until 15th February”, read the notification issued by ECP.
ECP has cited that it has received requests for extension in the deadline regarding submission date. Media reports have appeared in the press that the aspiring candidates are facing difficulties in the completion of legal formalities regarding filing of nomination papers.
The revised schedule is as follows;
- February 12th to 15th – Filing of nomination papers by the candidates with the returning officer
- February 16th – Publication of names of the nominated candidates
- February 17th to 18th – Scrutiny of nomination papers
- February 19th to 20th – Filing of appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers
- February 22nd to 23rd – Disposal of appeals by the Tribunal
- February 24th – Publication of revised list of candidates
- February 25th – Withdrawal of candidature
- March 3rd – Polling day for Senate elections
The Senate elections are being held for 48 new senators from across the country with the following distribution of seats;
- Islamabad – 2 seats
- Punjab – 11 seats
- Sindh – 11 seats
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – 12 seats
- Balochistan – 12 seats
