A prominent teacher associated with the Institute of Business Administration University (IBA) Sukkar was gunned down in the district Kandhkot area by unknown militants suspected to be from the Sundrani clan because of an ongoing enmity over “honour,” police said on Thursday.
Dr Mohammad Ajmal Sawand was returning to Sukkur from his Shawli village when attackers holed up in the woods along the road and opened fire on his car in Kandhkot’s Shalo area, killing him on the spot, according to a report.
According to the SSP Kandhkot Irfan Ali Samo, two groups of Sundrani and Sawand clans have been at odds since 2022 due to a clash that erupted over a matter of “honour.”
According to sources, the honour dispute involved a Sundrani clan girl and a Sawand community man. The man was murdered in September after being labelled of honour crime.
According to the SSP, a woman and four men from the Sundrani clan were killed in the clash last year.
According to the officer, shortly after last year’s clash, the Sawand clan abandoned their homes and fled the Shawli village, ostensibly to avoid retaliation. The SSP stated that police had cordoned off the area and raided various places searching for Dr Ajmal Sawand’s suspected killers.
Hundreds of armed Sawand community members and locals rushed to the ambush scene and transported the professor’s body to the taluka hospital. Following a post-mortem examination, the body was returned to the family.
The funeral prayer was held in the evening in Sukkur’s Society Area. Prof Sawand’s funeral was attended by teachers, students, government officials, and people from all walks of life.
According to IBA Vice Chancellor Asif Sheikh, Dr Sawand earned his PhD from Paris Descartes University and has been with the institute for the past eight years. He described Sawand as a distinguished scholar in the field of computer science who contributed significantly to the institute through his research work.
