Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday (today) filed an intra-court appeal against IHC’s verdict on Senate chairman election.
In his appeal, the Senate opposition leader has urged the court to nullify IHC verdict arguing that presiding officer’s decision to reject seven votes during the polling for Senate Chairman elections was wrong and unjustified.
The plea filed by Gilani’s lawyers Farooq H Naik, Javed Iqbal Venus, and Barrister Umar Sheikh, seeks immediate suspension of presiding officer’s decision in this regard.
It is to be noted that Yousuf Raza Gilani was elected as member Senate on March 3rd Senate Elections last month. He had secured 169 votes against Abdul Hafeez Sheikh’s 164 votes.
Gilani had contended and lost Senate Chairman elections against government-backed Sadiq Sanjrani. Gilani had managed to secure 42 votes as compared to Sanjrani’s 48 votes.
Moreover, Yousuf Raza Gilani became leader of opposition in the upper house on March 26th via securing the support of 30 Opposition senators for the prized post which has been a matter of contention between the PML-N and the PPP.
