Prime Minister Imran Khan, on his visit to Dasu Dam on Friday (today) highlighted the significance and benefits of low cost and clean energy for the country.
PM Imran Khan reviewed the constriction progress at Dasu Dam hydro power project and highlighted the significance of low-cost clean energy obtained from the project once its finished.
Expressing his views, the prime minister noted that such hydro power projects not only provide clean energy which is line with government’s pro-environmental initiatives, but also ensure that the energy is low-cost which essentially results in reduction in inflation.
Hydropower generation should have been given priority to produce cheap electricity as high-cost electricity causes increase in inflation.
The premier also lauded foreign engineers, workers along with local work force for their tireless efforts on this complex project.
Dasu Dam Hydro Power Project
Dasu Dam is a hydroelectric gravity dam currently under construction on the Indus River near Dasu in Kohistan District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. It is developed by Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), as a key component of the company’s Water Vision 2025. Inaugurated in 2017 but started by end 2019 because of funds issue.
The 242 meters (794 feet) tall dam will support a 4,320 MW hydropower station, to be built in two 2,160 MW stages. The plant is expected to start generating power in late 2024, and stage I is planned to complete by early 2025.
Water from the reservoir will be diverted to the power station located about 3.5 kilometers downstream.
The phase one of Dasu Dam will be completed by 2025, which will add 2,160 MW of electricity to the national grid. This capacity will increase to 4,320 MW with the completion of its second phase by 2029.
The project has also significantly contributed towards tackling unemployment by creating 8,000 new jobs in the area.
