Prime Minister Imran Khan, on Sunday, held a telephonic conversation with his Canadian counterpart – Justin Trudeau, to discuss debt relief initiative for developing countries amid virus crisis.
As per the details provided by Prime Minister Office (PMO), the two leaders discussed the COVID-19 crisis and the challenges emerging from this unprecedented situation.
Both the leaders stressed upon the significance of coordinated steps on national level to tackle the dire socio-economic situation that has emerged due to COVID-19 pandemic.
“I spoke on the phone with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan earlier today. We talked about the latest COVID-19 developments and the measures we’ve taken to protect our people and our economies,” said the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social media.
Furthermore, PM Imran Khan also expressed his gratitude to the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for Canada’s support on G20’s debt relief for Pakistan. He also urged his Canadian counterpart to further extend Canada’s support in ‘Global Initiative for Debt Relief’ for developing countries amid COVID-19 crisis which has given rise to severe socio-economic repercussions around the world.
Earlier, various international institutions and several countries had announced debt relief for 76 nations including Pakistan, according to which Pakistan’s debt repayments amounting to over US$ 12 billion have been suspended until December 2020.
