Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed to expedite the work on completion of electoral reforms while once again reiterating support for electronic voting machines (EVM) claiming that it will ensure free, fair and transparent elections.
According to Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Imran Khan chaired a meeting regarding electoral reforms and introduction of EVMs for conducting the elections.
The meeting was also attended by Shibli Faraz – Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Senator Dr Shahzad Waseem – Leader of the House in Senate, Azam Swati – Federal Minister for Railways, Farrukh Habib – Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Babar Awan – SAPM on Parliamentary Affairs.
The premier was briefed on the progress pertaining to electoral reforms and EVMs who then stressed that the latter will play a significant role in eliminating rigging from the electoral process ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.
Government is committed to fulfil constitutional requirements to ensuring transparency in the general elections in the country, said the prime minister.
Prior to this, Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry has hinted on a ‘new mechanism’ to be devised for next elections in a statement earlier this month.
It is pertinent to know that the federal government in May earlier this year, promulgated a presidential ordinance titled ‘Elections (Second Amendment) Ordinance 2021’, authorizing and binding the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to procure electronic voting machines (EVMs) and to enable the overseas Pakistanis to exercise their right to vote while staying in their country of residence in the next general elections.
