Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced to slash its staff by up to 50 per cent.
According to details, the national carrier has decided to divide its staff into two categories followed by a reduction of up to 50 per cent in staff strength.
PIA’s staff will be divided into two divisions namely ‘core category’ which will comprise of engineering, repairs and kitchen departments. Meanwhile, the second division titled ‘non-core category’ will have personnel from marketing, HR, finance, flight services and procurement departments.
PIA intends to reduce its staff strength from 12,900 to 7,500. The airline currently employs 10,500 and 2,400 daily workers respectively.
The airline plans to bring its employees down to around 5,600-6,000 by 2021 next year.
The development comes as earlier, Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) had approved voluntary separation scheme for PIA employees to ease financial burden on the national carrier.
