David F Helvey – Assistant Secretary of Defence of Indo-Pacific Affairs, has acknowledged and commended Pakistan’s progressive and significant role in Afghan Peace Process.
In a statement while speaking to US Senate Armed Services Committee, David F Helvey praised Pakistan’s notable contribution in facilitating and ensuring the success of ongoing Afghan Peace Process.
While responding to a query from Senator Joe Manchin – a Democratic Senator from West Virginia, David F Helvey remarked that Pakistan has indeed played an important role in Afghanistan.
Pakistan supported the Afghan peace process. Pakistan also has allowed us to have overflight and access to be able to support our military presence in Afghanistan, he noted.
The senior Pentagon official reiterated his government’s commitment to continue its cooperation with Pakistan due to its support and contribution to the future of Afghanistan.
He also accentuated that Pakistan has facilitated US over the years by allowing overflights and providing access to the US and allowing it to sustain its military presence in Afghanistan.
The development comes as US President Joe Biden last month, announced to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by September 11th 2021 this year.
It is pertinent to know that United States and Taliban signed a peace agreement back in February 2020 last year. The pact provisioned withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan on condition that Afghan soil will not be used against United States.
