Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has unanimously nominated Jamiat Ulema Islam’s (JUI-F) Abdul Ghafoor Haideri for Deputy Chairman Senate.
As per details, the 11-party anti-government alliance under the banner of PDM, has nominated JUI-F’s Abdul Ghafoor Haideri as opposition’s candidate for Deputy Chairman Senate.
The development comes as Government also offered the post of Deputy Chairman Senate to the senior JUI-F leader earlier today.
Federal Minister for Defence – Pervez Khattak along with current Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani, met with JUI-F’s Abdul Ghafoor Haideri and offered him the post of Deputy Chairman Senate.
It is to be noted that PDM has nominated PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani, whereas government has backed serving Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani for a second term for the top Senate slot.
Election for Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman are scheduled to be held on Friday March 12th later this week.
Gilani’s Senate Win Challenged
Meanwhile, Yousuf Raza Gilani’s win in Senate elections has been challenged IHC and ECP separately. PTI’s Ali Nawaz has filed a petition in IHC challenging Yousuf Raza Gilani’s win in March 3rd Senate elections.
The plea argues that PPP leader and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is ineligible to be a senator as he is a ‘convicted’ individual.
The petition filed by PTI seeks Gilani’s win to be declared null and void by the court.
Separately, ECP held a hearing seeking disqualification of newly elected senator Yousuf Raza Gilani over rigging allegations pertaining to former premier’s son Ali Haider Gilani’s leaked video that showed him ‘teaching’ PTI MNAs on how to ‘waste’ their vote in Senate elections.
The ECP hearing was held after petitioner Pervez Hussain had accused Yousuf Raza Gilani of being involved in fraud and ineligible to hold a senate seat in accordance to Article 62 and 63 of the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan.
