A showdown between the government and Opposition is expected today (Monday) as authorities deploy containers and register FIRs to thwart the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM ) from holding its rally.
The public gathering also marks PPP’s 53rd foundation day.
The PDM, on the other hand, seems adamant about holding rallies with PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz saying the party will hold jalsas wherever authorities put up containers.
Aseefa Bhutto Zardari landed in Multan Monday morning and headed straight to the Gilani House. She is standing in for PPP chairman and brother Bilawal Bhutto Zardari who is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus last week. Around 4:00 pm, she led the PPP rally to the jalsa gah.
PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz has also left Jati Umrah for Multan and is leading the party’s rally to the jalsa gah. PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is also leading a rally from Ghanta Ghar in Multan.
IGP allows rally
In a surprise move, Punjab Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Inam Ghani has ordered against preventing Pakistan Democratic Movement leaders from leading rallies in Multan. The police chief has also ordered removal of all barriers in the way of political workers belonging to the Opposition.
Last week, Multan administration had denied permission to hold the jalsa at Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh Stadium citing coronavirus restrictions.
