Islamabad: Pakistan on Thursday, announced to pledge $3 million to South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) COVID-19 Emergency Fund which aims to bolster regional efforts to tackle coronavirus outbreak.
“The government of Pakistan has pledged US$3 million towards the SAARC Covid-19 Emergency Fund to support regional efforts in the fight against coronavirus,” read the statement issued by spokesperson for Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“It has been conveyed that all proceeds of the fund should be administered by the SAARC Secretariat….Being a founding member, Pakistan considers SAARC an important platform for regional cooperation,” it added.
SAARC was informed of the decision via telephonic conversation between Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood and Secretary General SAARC Esala Ruwan Weerakoon.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to SAARC process and that it will continue working with the member states to strengthen regional cooperation.
