Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Tuesday, reaffirmed that the government has no intentions of abrogating 18th Amendment.
Speaking to the Senate session of coronavirus, the government does not have the necessary majority required for such measures and the opposition must not worry about 18th Amendment.
“We don’t have a two-thirds majority to bring any change, why are you afraid,” he said.
Furthermore, expressing his views on opposition’s criticism regarding the delay in parliamentary session, Shah Mahmood Qureshi stated that the PPP leader and the deputy chairperson of the senate – Mr Saleem Mandviwalla himself hadn’t supported the call to convene senate session. He stated that the lack of consensus among opposition itself is to be blamed for the delay in parliamentary session.
Mr Qureshi also warned of a global recession, saying that the world economy might shrink by 3 per cent due to coronavirus crisis. He also defended the government’s decision to lift the lockdown as fact developing countries like Pakistan will be more affected by this pandemic and that around 18 million people would have lost their jobs if the lockdown hadn’t been lifted, whereas Pakistan’s export has already reduced by 40 per cent in recent days due to coronavirus lockdown.
Coronavirus has wreaked havoc all across the globe and all countries are in a state of crisis. Tens of thousands of people have died due to coronavirus in countries such as United States, United Kingdom and Italy, the minister added.
