Kabul: Head of the NDS gender department, Gen. Sharmila has died of wounds from a magnetic IED blast in Kabul on Monday.
Gen. Sharmila Frough was a key figure in Afghan security establishment and was currently the head of gender department at The National Directorate of Security (NDS), the primary Afghan intelligence agency.
US embassy has issued a statement offering condolences to the victim’s family and praised Gen. Sharmila’s role in the fight against terrorism.
“Today, we mourn the death of NDS Gen. Sharmila Frough and offer our condolences to her family. For 30 years, she served Afghanistan. She was a role model, a founding member of the women’s security shura, and a true patriot. We thank her & all those serving their country,” the statement read.
The attack comes as Afghan government and Taliban undergo process of finalizing the terms for the much-awaited prisoner exchange, which is a part of the intra-Afghan dialogue and was promised in an agreement signed between the United States and the Taliban in Doha.
