National Accountability Bureau (NAB), on Tuesday, announced that it will investigate sugar and wheat crisis that occurred in the country few months back.
Chairman NAB Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal, in a NAB Executive Board meeting, has approved to start an investigation looking into the sugar and wheat crisis.
“NAB will thoroughly investigate the scandal worth billions of rupees. Smuggling, an increase of prices and wheat and sugar subsidies will also be investigated,” said the statement issued by NAB.
In addition to it, the meeting also approved to close the investigation against former attorney general Malik Qayyum due to lack of evidence
Furthermore, inquiry against the officers and staff of the Privatization Commission and the managing committee of the Interior Employees Housing Society has also been shut down.
NAB’s decision to launch probe into sugar, wheat crisis comes as earlier this month, federal government had released Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) report regarding sugar and wheat crisis that grappled the country in January 2020.
The three-member bench, headed by DG FIA Wajid Zia presented the investigative report regarding sugar, wheat crisis which stated that the crisis due to poor planning by the federal and provincial governments.
The report also named several of
PTI’s senior members and leaders including Jahangir Khan Tareen, a brother of
Food Minister Khusro Bakhtiyar PML-Q leader Moonis Elahi and others, as the
primary beneficiaries of the crisis.
