Another lion has died at Karachi zoo reportedly due to old age and other natural causes.
According to officials at Karachi Zoo, the 19-year-old Asiatic lion passed away after suffering from heart failure which was later confirmed from the post mortem examination.
The lion was brought to Karachi Zoo back in 2017 after being rescued from a circus under Sindh Wildlife Protection Act 2020 which prohibits the display of wild animals for entertainment purposes and that the wildlife department is the custodian of the law.
Saif Abbas – director Karachi Zoo, has said that the lion had in fact surpassed its natural life span of 16-18 years in natural habitat (in the wild).
The lion had high fat deposits in its coronary arteries which indicated that the animal was suffering from obesity which could’ve been prevented.
However, animals can develop health related problems in old age just like humans, added Saif Abbas.
It is to be noted that Karachi Zoo administration had been facing severe criticism over its failure to take care of animals who are being subjected to abhorrent living conditions in captivity.
