Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed Punjab government to ensure free-of-cost burials at cemeteries across the province.
Hearing a case on the issue of shortage of cemeteries and lack of proper maintenance at burial grounds, LHC has issued directives to Punjab government regarding free burials at graveyards.
LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan, in his eight-page verdict has barred the authorities from charging any kind of money for burial across the province.
It is the responsibility of the government to bear the cost of burial of the citizens Charging taxpayers for burials is inappropriate, the top judge remarked.
Quoting several Hadiths and Quranic verses, LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan ordered the government to establish ‘model graveyards’ in Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi on urgent basis.
Furthermore, the court verdict in response to petition filed by Mubashir Ahmed Almas, also made it compulsory land for allocation of land for graveyards in private housing societies.
