Pakistan’s permanent representative to UN – Munir Akram has stressed that Kashmiris’ ‘legitimate’ for self-determination and terrorism are two different things and must not be mixed up.
Expressing his views at United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Arria Formula meeting, Munir Akram stressed that the legitimate struggle of people of IoK against illegal Indian occupation must not be termed as terrorism.
The meeting was convened by Mexico, non-permanent member of UNSC over the issue of ‘Upholding the collective security system of the UN Charter: the use of force in international law, non-state actors and legitimate self-defence’.
The ‘Arria formula’ meeting is an informal discussion between the 15-member UNSC that allows various issued to be debated openly and explicitly. It is named after former Venezuelan UN ambassador, Diego Arriva.
Furthermore, Munir Akram accentuated that Pakistan is facing cross border terrorism by militant outfits which are in fact being support by a third country.
War against terror has in fact been used to justify unilateral foreign interventions, occupation which are aimed at coercion and occupation of weaker nations.
Pakistan’s territorial sovereignty must be respected and it reserves the right to self-defence against cross-border attacks, aggression, he said.
