Karachi Union of Journalist President Hassan Abbas and general secretary Aajiz Jamali have urged the media organizations owners to release their staff’s salaries and other dues before Eid.
They office bearers of the journalists’ representative body said that they are aware that Sindh government has disbursed large payments to media houses as previous advertising dues. The province has also cleared the dues of advertising agencies as well.
The government had agreed that release of previous payments will be on the condition of payment of salaries and dues of media employees. However, KUJ was not informed prior to payment of this amount.
KUJ insisted on this condition because hundreds of media employees are forced to continue working without their salaries for several months. The union said that it is now the responsibility of the provincial government to direct the owners to pay their staff.
KUJ also pointed out that many media organizations had also laid off their staff during the pandemic lockdown while several others had withheld the salaries and other dues.
Abbas and Jamali urged the Federal Information Minister Shibli Faraz and Provincial Information Minister Nasir Hussein Shah to immediately take notice of this situation and ensure the payment of salaries to media workers.
