Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Tuesday, passed bill limiting the weight of children’s schoolbags.
KP Assembly passed School Bags Weight Limitation Bill 2020 on Tuesday aimed at restricting weight of schoolbags carried by children.
As per the new bill, weight of schoolbags will be restricted and will vary depending on the respective class/grade of the student.
Schoolbags for the student of 1st grade will be limited to 2.4 kilograms, 2.6 kilograms for 2nd grade and 3 kilograms for 3rd grade.
Meanwhile, schoolbags of high school students will be limited to seven kilograms.
In case of violation, strict action will be taken against the school principals who will be subjected to Rs 200,000 fine.
The development comes as earlier, Peshawar High Court (PHC) had directed to formulate a relevant draft regarding limiting the weight of children’s schoolbags.
The draft formulated by provincial cabinet had proposed schoolbags of students from 2nd to 5th grade will be limited between 2.5 to 5.3 kilograms and 5.4 to 6.5 kilograms for students of 6th to 10th grade.
Schoolbags of 11th and 12th grade were proposed to be limited to weigh 7 kilograms.
