Karachi University’s ICCBS has been declared as Pakistan’s first ever UNESCO Centre for Excellence on Friday (today).
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Friday, declared University of Karachi’s International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) its first ever ‘Category 2’ Center for Excellence in Pakistan.
UNESCO has announced to establish a chair on Medicinal and Bio-organic Natural Product Chemistry at ICCBS, UoK.
According to Prof Dr M Iqbal Choudhry – Director ICCBS the step is aimed at promoting research, training, information and documentation on natural medicinal and bio-organic product chemistry.
It is to be noted that UNESCO’s Category 2 centers are part of its network of institutions spread across the world that strive to carry out organization’s primary objectives and agendas.
Meanwhile, a UNESCO chair promotes education, natural and social sciences, culture and communication. The chair is established for an initial period of four years
Prof Dr M Iqbal Choudhry has termed the development as significant milestone which will allow students and the faculty to collaborate internationally-recognized researchers from various universities and institutions around the world.
