Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested a NED University student from Karachi accused of terror funding for a Syria-based extremist organization.
Addressing a press conference, DIG CTD – Raja Umar Khatab apprised that as per the forensic report of confiscated cellphones, the accused was sending money via cryptocurrency ‘bitcoin’ and online transaction service ‘Easy Paisa’ to Daesh terrorists in Syria.
The money was first being exchanged into dollar and then converted into bitcoin.
The suspect Umar Bin Khalid is a student of NED University Karachi, and was arrested during a CTD raid near Karachi’s Cantt Station.
The accused – Muhammad Umar Bin Khalid, has so far sent more than Rs 1 million to Syria, added DIG CTD.
The accused is also said to have been in contact with an individual named ‘Zia’ in Hyderabad and was sending money to him as well.
furthermore, Saad – one of Umar Khalid’s accomplice, is said to be associated with Al-Qaida and is in hiding.
