As Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan enters the home stretch of its phenomenal box office run, the film is looking for one final surge this weekend, which will be its sixth in release. Friday is being celebrated as National Cinema Day, when tickets for all movies at participating venues will be sold for Rs 99 apiece. On day 36 in theatres, the action drama made an estimated Rs 80 lakh across all languages in India, and took its nett domestic total to Rs 627.4 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
While earlier estimates had pegged the daily numbers this week at above Rs 1 crore each day, updated figures reveal that the film has been making just under Rs 1 crore since Monday, when it made Rs 94 lakh. Jawan added Rs 88 lakh on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The main Hindi-language version is contributing to nearly the entirety of its collections at this point.
Directed by Atlee, Jawan was designed as Shah Rukh’s first pan-India film, with prominent releases in the Tamil and Telugu-language belts as well. The film has grossed a total of around Rs 60 crore from these versions. To further boost interest in the South of the country, Atlee also brought aboard Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in prominent roles, while Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment hosted a grand audio launch event – a staple pit stop in the South Indian publicity tour – prior to the film’s release.
During the course of its run, Jawan broke numerous box office records. It emerged as the biggest domestic hit in the history of Bollywood, overtaking Shah Rukh’s own Pathaan, which ended its run with Rs 543 crore. Jawan also overtook Pathaan to claim the titles for the biggest opening day, opening weekend, and opening week in Bollywood history. It is currently the second-biggest Hindi movie of all time on the worldwide list behind Dangal, and the fifth-biggest overall Indian film behind KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Dangal.
