India’s former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral is being remembered on his birth anniversary, he was a student of Faiz Ahmad Faiz – Pakistan’s world-famous poet and philosopher.
Inder Kumar Gujral was born on December 4, 1919 in Jhelum. He studied at DAV (now Islamia College, Civil Lines), Haley College of Commerce and FC College.
Only few people know the fact that Kumar Gujral had also been a student of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, a prominent Urdu poet. Gujral was a Pakistani Origin Indian and Faiz taught him in his student days in Lahore.
IK Gujral was a member of the All India Students Federation and took an active part in the independence movement. He was imprisoned in the 1942 “Leave India Movement”. He was also a member of the Communist Party of India during this period. Later, the Congress and the entire Janata Dal continued to do politics from the party platform.
Kumar Gujral served as the Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. He has previously served as Finance Minister, Foreign Minister and Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union.
Satish Kumar Gujral, a world-renowned Indian painter and sculptor, was the younger brother of IK Gujral.
Faiz’s student took his last breath on November 30, 2012 at the age of 92.
