With over 5,000 deaths, India became the 7th most-affected country out of the 10 worst-hit nations from COVID-19 with an increase of 8,392 cases over the last 24 hours, taking the nation-wide tally to 1,90,535 to date.
According to the data from the Union Health Ministry, India now stands at the seventh spot in the list of 10 nations worst hit by the pandemic, with more cases than that of France, NDTV reported on Monday.
The US has so far reported over 1.83 million cases of the virus, making it the nation with the most number of confirmed cases. However, Brazil follows with over 500,000 cases to date.
India saw the spike in cases after the government eased lockdown conditions to allow free movement of people and resume financial activity as the country buckled beneath the weight of the coronavirus.
PM Modi on Sunday cautioned people against showing any laxity in the fight against COVID-19 and asked them to be “extra alert and careful”, while acknowledging that the poor and labourers have been hit the hardest by the crisis.
