Islamabad: President Dr Arif Alvi has directed the authorities to ensure the provision of sustained and effective internet service to students amid COVID-19 lockdown.
Students and teaching fraternity have been struggling to conduct their affairs as educational institutions have been closed across the country and internet services have been burdened due to the overwhelming exponential increase in usage as various educational institutions have resorted to conducting online classes.
Chairing a meeting on bandwidth issues amid COVID-19 lockdown, Aif Alvi was briefed various technical hurdles and limitations due to the increase internet usage amid country-wide lockdown.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mahmood, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Digital Pakistan Tania Aidrus, Information Technology and Telecommunications Secretary Shoaib Siddiqui, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman retired Maj Gen Amir Azeem and Ministry of Finance Additonal Secretary Ahmed Mujtaba Memon.
According to the issued statement, President Arif Alvi has instructed concerned authorities to resolve the technical glitches and ensure a sustained, speedy and effective internet coverage across the country.
Earlier, President Arif Alvi had hinted on the possibility of reducing or removing the taxes imposed on ‘cell phone data’ subscription and usage along with the initiative of improving bandwidth in rural areas.
