National Identity Card (NIC) is a source of pride for every Pakistani. However, there are several hidden features and intricacies that are unknown to the general public.
Here are a list of interesting facts and hidden features incorporated in Pakistan’s NIC.
NIC issued by NADRA holds a 13-digit code. The first digit of this code is used to identify citizens on the basis of their respective provinces. For example the digit ‘1’ is used to identify the citizens belonging from province KPK, ‘2’ for FATA, ‘3’ for Punjab, ‘4’ for Sindh. ‘5’ for Balochistan, ‘6’ for Islamabad and ‘7’ for Gilgit-Baltistan.
Next part of this 13-digit code is based on five digits that reflects the division, district, tehsil, union council of the respective citizen.
Notably the seven-digit code in the middle *****-1234567-* is in fact the ‘family number’ of the respective citizen. Family members are given common numbers on NIC to keep record of all the individuals belonging from any specific family via establishing a comprehensive ‘family tree’.
The last digit represents the gender of the respective citizen. For males it is always an odd digit (1,3,5,7,9); whereas for females it is even digits (2,4,6,8).
