Lahore: PML-N and PPP have demanded immediate and strict action against those who profited from the sugar and wheat crisis, especially those have been nominated in the FIA’s report submitted to Prime Minister.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif tweeted, “FIA Inquiry report is an eye-opener that has exposed nexus between government and crony capitalists manning it.”
The report is a charge sheet against Prime Minister Imran Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, said Shehbaz Sharif.
Punjab PPP president Qamar Zaman Kaira expressed that the FIA’ report is worrying, as it has nominated key individuals within the PTI, namely Jahangir Tareen and Khusro Bakhtiyar along with government’s allies such as Q-league leadership.
Mr Kaira has criticized the government of being explicitly involved in this matter as all the decision regarding the import and export of wheat and sugar are approved by the federal cabinet.
This severe criticism comes as the inquiry committee constituted by Prime Minister Imran Khan to investigate the sugar and wheat crisis, has held the federal and Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments responsible.
The report by the three-member committee, headed by Wajid Zia – DG FIA, has named Jahangir Khan Tareen, Makhdoom Omer Shehryar Khan (brother of Khusro Bakhtiar) and his partners Chaudhry Munir and Chaudhry Moonis Elahi as the major beneficiaries of sugar export subsidy and price hike.
The committee has revealed that maximum benefit of export was drawn by JDW Group (Jahangir Khan Tareen) by availing itself of 22 per cent of total subsidy of Rs 561 million.
