Federal government, on Wednesday, announced that it is in the process of preparing a draft for the expected NAB amendment ordinance.
The expected National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendment ordinance will roll back some powers of Chairman NAB and will see that cases handled by the federal and provincial authorities/institutions will be under the jurisdiction of NAB.
Furthermore, after the amendment, NAB will no longer be able to investigate corruption cases which amount to less than Rs 1 billion and federal cabinet will be exempted from NAB inquires.
NAB is expected to hand over tax related probes to relevant authorities/institutions once the amendment ordinance is passed.
The appointment of the accountability bureau head will be made by consultation between Prime Minister and the opposition leader.
Expressing his views on the matter, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Accountability and Interior – Shahzad Akbar has clarified that the draft for NAB amendment ordinance has not yet been finalized and it is still in works.
“The ordinance will be prepared with the consultation of NAB and Opposition. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government believes in rule of law and transparent accountability,” he said.
“Don’t know who is spreading such fake news as I haven’t started work on the ordinance yet,” he commented on the false and fake amendment draft being circulated on social media.
