Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhary on Saturday said Eidul Fitr would fall on May 24 (Sunday).
The technology minister said that sighting of the moon has always been controversial in the past.
However, Minister for Religious Affairs Sahibzada Noor-ul-Haq Qadri on Saturday said that the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will decide the matter of Eid ul Fitr moon sighting in its meeting in Karachi on May 23 (today).
In response to technology minister’s press conference, Qadri said that Sharia believes on Ruet of moon and witness accounts with regard to the sighting of the crescent. “The science and scientific equipment could assist the process of moon sighting,” the minister said.
“A representative of the Ministry of Science and Technology has also made a member of the moon sighting committee this time,” he said.
“Fawad Chaudhry is my good friend but he is playing over the moon-sighting issue these days,” he remarked on a lighter note.
“Sighting the moon is no longer a problem due to advancement in science and technology,” Chaudhary said.”Islam is a religion of knowledge and religious festivals should not be made controversial.”
“Religious festivals should promote unity and harmony in the country instead of discord,” he added.
