Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday, has denied the possibility of holding Senate Elections before February 10th 2021 next year.
In a statement, ECP has clarified that Senate Elections cannot be conducted before February 10th 2021 as a law defining procedure of Senate polls already exists.
As per the standard procedure, ECP has 30 days to conduct Senate elections. Elections for Chairman and Deputy Chairman are expected to be held on March 12th next year.
The ECP clarification comes as earlier federal government had announced to hold Senate elections in February 2021 instead of March.
The proposal to conduct Senate elections ahead of schedule was tabled by Fawad Chaudhry – Federal Minister for Science and Technology, and was later approved in a federal cabinet meeting chaired by PM Imran Khan.
In addition to it, the government had proposed to adopt ‘open voting’ for Senate elections i.e. via ‘show of hands’.
