Muzaffarabad: Earthquake tremors, on Thursday night, rattled Muzaffarabad and various parts of Jhelum, Neelum Valley and Bagh – Azad Kashmir.
According to sources, earthquake tremors induced sheer panic among the residents, who came out of their homes and started reciting Quranic verses.
No loss of life and property has been reported yet.
As per the National Seismic Monitoring Centre – Islamabad, the epicentre of the quake was at the depth of 217 kilometres at Afghan-Tajikistan border.
Prior to this, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake had struck Azad Kashmir region on September 24 last year. Around 40 people died, and additional 850 were injured due to the falling debris. The earthquake caused severe damage to 135 houses in Mirpur District, with a further 319 being partially damaged, most in Mirpur and just four in Bhimber District. Two bridges were reported damaged and parts of several roads were affected, particularly 14 km of the Main Jatlan Road
Pakistan is among the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. The country is located on the Eurasian Tectonic Plate, which is known for high levels of seismic activity.
