KARACHI: Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed his concerns over the health and economic situation in the wake of the global pandemic during an interview with an international news channel on Saturday.
“The rich and resourceful countries must step forward to help the poor nation in this situation,” the young politician stressed.
During his interview with the British broadcaster Sky News, Bhutto made it clear that global powers must use their resources and equip poor countries with testing capacity and other health infrastructure so that they are able to fight off the pathogen.
He said that without global cooperation, it is impossible to come out of this situation for any country. He pointed out global powers must review their approach towards countries under sanctions. Quoting Iran’s example, he said that people are dying in large numbers there due to economic and diplomatic sanctions.
He said that lockdown and social distancing are the only way out. Our health infrastructure cannot support the burden the pandemic is likely to pose. Even a country like Italy could not combat it with their excellent health services and structure.
He said that as opposition party, PPP has offered the federal government its full support in fight against COVID-19 pandemic. However, he lamented the fact the federal government in Pakistan is lending little support to provinces and PPP has taken strong initiatives in measures against the spread of virus in its provincial jurisdiction of Sindh.
