Paris: France has reported the fourth highest COVID-19 related death toll in the world, with more than 10,000 casualties.
The total death toll from Covid-19 has risen to 10,343 with a total of 110,065 confirmed coronavirus cases in the country.
“We are in the ascending phase of the epidemic, even if it is slowing a bit. We have not yet reached the peak,” warned Jérôme Salomon, head of the public health authority in France.
French authorities are now giving a daily combined death toll of hospitals and nursing homes. Previously they had only issued hospitals’ death toll on a daily basis.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Paris officials announced that they would ban lone daytime jogging as people continue to flout anti-coronavirus lockdown rules.
“The lockdown is difficult for many French people, I am fully aware of this. But it is essential if we do not wish to find ourselves in an even worse situation than the one we are experiencing today,” said Prime Minister Edouard Philippe while addressing the French parliament.
France has imposed a nation-wide lockdown until April 15th, with all non-essential trips outside the home banned. Everyone is required to have a signed, timed and dated permission form every time they step outside.
