The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Tuesday, lambasted K-Electric’s administration directing a detailed audit to be conducted of Karachi’s sole electricity supply company.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed presided over the hearing held in SC Karachi Registry regarding electrocution deaths and unexplained power outages in the metropolitan city.
During the hearing CJP Gulzar Ahmed reprimanded Moonis Alvi – CEO K-Electric over electrocution deaths in Karachi during recent rain spells.
“The name of the KE CEO should be put on the ECL (exit control list),” remarked the top judge.
Furthermore, CJP Gulzar Ahmed said that a complete and extensive audit of K-Electric must be done regarding its performance and that the electricity supply company must provide details regarding installation of wires and other infrastructure developments.
Expressing displeasure over electrocution incidents CJP said that legal action must be taken against K-Electric administration for such negligence.
“From now on, the case of electrocution deaths in the city will be registered against K-electric officials,” said Justice Gulzar Ahmed.
Tauseef H Farooqi – Chairman National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) also attended the hearing and was directed by the court to ensure unhindered power supply to the metropolis and prevent any power outages at all.
It is pertinent to know that recent monsoon spell in Karachi resulted in prolonged power outages in several areas of the metropolis, whereas several people died due electrocution as a result of unprotected electricity wires across the city.
