Member of Parliament for Manchester, Gorton and Chair of the APPG on Britain-Pakistan Trade and Tourism, Afzal Khan MP has made an earnest appeal to the UK government to provide urgent help to the people of Pakistan who are suffering through the humanitarian and climate emergency.
In his letter to the Secretary of State for the FCDO Ms.Liz Truss MP, he expressed horror over the recent devastation caused by flooding in the Pakistan. He further said that a third of the country underwater more than 1000 people died and about estimation of $10 billion worth of damage has been done. The country has been plunged into a humanitarian and climate emergency.
Mr. Afzal said the aftermath of the monster monsoon has swept away lives, homes, crops and bridges. With 33 million people impacted and vast areas cut off from supplies and power, urgent help and aid is needed. He asked the UK government to outline about current steps which being taken to alleviate the humanitarian emergency in Pakistan.
“I understand that the UK government has offered £1.5 million of financial aid to help, however this is simply insufficient to support and repair the damage wreaked by the floods.” He mention in his letter and further said in fact, the UN has today launched an appeal of $160 million in emergency funds for the country. He sought the details the conversation they had done with the Pakistani and UN officials in helping with this important appeal.
The awful scenes in Pakistan are a sobering reminder of how climate change can affect countries with the lowest contributions to the global crisis and are becoming increasingly vulnerable to its effects, he said. He urges the UK government to take immediate and meaningful action which addresses the devastating loss of infrastructure and provides help to those directly affected by these formidable events.
