Experts have called for close coordination among healthcare professionals to ensure effective response to poliovirus through vaccine and safeguard children from suffering disabilities in the province.
“Coordination among public health bodies, medical students and communities can play vital role to combat polio if they work in unison. We need to promote immunisation to protect children from host of ailments,” Dr Khalid Rehman, the director of Institute of Public Health and Social Sciences (IPH&SS) at Khyber Medical University, told a seminar here on Tuesday.
He said that polio, which rendered children handicapped, was preventable through vaccination. He said that public awareness regarding the importance of eliminating preventable diseases like polio was need of the hour.
The seminar was attended by students, faculty members of the university and healthcare professionals. Speakers spoke about prevention of diseases and public health.
Dr Khalid said that sustained efforts, especially in high-risk areas, were crucial to achieve long-term health goals. Dr Saima Abid, the president of Pakistan Healthcare Association (PHA) and head of community medicine department at Pak International Medical College, acknowledged the contribution of medical students to public health campaigns, particularly Covid-19.
