A major gas leak at a chemical factory in Southern India has killed at least 10 people, while hundreds have been admitted to various hospital with the fear of rise in death toll.
According to details, the gas leak occurred at the LG Polymers chemical plant in Visakhapatnam in Southern India. The gas leaked, has been identified as a synthetic chemical called ‘styrene’, a chemical used in the production of polystyrene plastics and resins.
Exposure to styrene, also known as ethenylbenzene, vinylbenzene can affect the central nervous system (CNS), causing headache, fatigue, weakness, and depression.
As per unconfirmed sources, the gas leak occurred from two 5,000-tonne tanks that had been unattended due to India’s coronavirus lockdown in place since late March.
Expressing his views on the impact of the gas on people affected by it, Dr. C.V. Rao, Director, GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences stated, “Depending on the intensity of inhaling the poisonous gas, a person could face complications in the lungs and inhaling oxygen. It could lead to fatality due to damage to central nervous system.”
The government officials have been blaming the company for the gas leak. “The company managing the LG Polymers plant has to be responsible for the gas leak. They will have to come and explain exactly what all protocols were followed, and what all were not followed. Accordingly, criminal action will be taken against them,” said Andhra Pradesh Industries Minister MG Reddy.
‘LG Chem’, which is a South Korean chemical company, has issued a statement saying, “The gas leak situation is now under control and we are exploring all ways to provide speedy treatment for those who suffer from inhaling the leaked gas.”
Authorities have warned of a higher death toll as 1,000 people in an area of 3 kilometres have been reported to be severely affected by the gas.
