The Punjab government, has announced the implementation of a new local government system in the province.
As per the details, all union council offices in the government buildings would be dissolved and converted into field offices while those present in the rented buildings will be vacated. While the union council employees have been directed to report back to their parent departments.
Earlier, Dr Ahmad Javed Qazi – Secretary Local Government and Community Development (LG&CD) Punjab had stated, “All the 3,454 defunct union councils of Punjab which had been constituted under the Punjab Local Government Act 2013, and continued under Section 316 (2) of the Punjab Local Government Act 2019 shall discontinue providing public service with effect from 1st May 2020.”
“We are striving to digitalize and automate our function, hence, citizens shall soon be able to report online for birth and death registration in the province,” he added.
Prior to this, Prime Minister Imran Khan in November 2019, had highlighted the significance of the new local government system and that it will truly empower local government bodies and will prove to be a testament to the devolution of power which is a basic principle of democratic system.
