National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) has revealed that more than 19,000 social media accounts have been taken down over hate speech, terrorism and incitement to violence across the country.
As per details, Google, Facebook and Twitter took down a total of 19,727 social media accounts on Pakistan government’s request.
Pakistan had requested these tech giants to take down various social media accounts and pages which were involved in spreading hate and terrorism and inciting violence in the country.
Following Pakistan’s request, 9,633 pages involved in inciting religious hatred were taken down along with 10,094 social media which were responsible for promoting terrorism in various forms.
Furthermore, 5 websites have also been blocked following PTA’s request.
According to NACTA statistics, 24,038 social media-related complaints were filed in 2020. The development comes as social media platforms faced a limited temporary 4-hour suspension on April 16th last week as a preemptive measure to tackle any possible protests and demonstrations across the country.
