Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday (today) announced that Senate elections will be held on March 3rd next month.
Election Commission of Pakistan hereby calls upon the Members of National Assembly to elect Members of the Senate against one General seat and one seat for women from the federal capita and provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to elect Senate members against seven General seats, two women seats and two seats for technocrats including Ulema from each province and one seat for non-Muslims from KP and Balochistan each, read the notification issued by ECP.
Schedule for Senate elections is as follows:
- February 11th – Public notices to be issued for nomination papers
- February 12th to 13 – Nomination papers submission
- February 14th – Announcement of nominated candidates
- February 15th to 16th – Scrutiny of nomination papers
- February 17th to 18th – Appeals to be filed against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers
- February 19th to 20th – Conclusion of appeals by tribunal
- February 21st – Announcement of revised list of candidates
- February 22nd – Withdrawal of candidature
- March 3rd – Polling day for Senate elections
In Islamabad, Senate elections will be held at Parliament House, whereas in provinces polling will take place at provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, KP and Balochistan.
The Senate elections are being held for 48 new senators from across the country with the following distribution of seats;
- Islamabad – 2 seats
- Punjab – 11 seats
- Sindh – 11 seats
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – 12 seats
- Balochistan – 12 seats
